Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 5,278

The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has climbed to 5,278, according to updated official figures released on Monday.

The twin earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck on June 24 and caused widespread devastation across northern Venezuela, with the coastal state of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas, among the hardest-hit areas.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said the latest figures showed that at least 5,278 people had been killed, while the number of injured remained at 16,740.

Authorities also reported that more than 850 buildings sustained damage, with 190 collapsing completely.

The government has yet to release an estimate of the number of people still missing following the disaster.

The government further reported that more than 23,500 displaced residents are currently sheltering in temporary camps set up in locations including stadiums and public squares, where volunteers continue to provide medical care and distribute relief supplies.
