A gas-laden tanker caught fire in the early hours of Thursday along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the incident occurred at the Ola Farm Bus Stop, with no deaths or injuries recorded.
In a statement, LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi said emergency officials arrived at the scene to find the tanker in flames.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the driver lost control after the tanker hit a speed bump at high speed, resulting in a tyre burst that immediately ignited the vehicle.
“Initial findings indicate that the vehicle was travelling at speed when it struck a road bump.
“The impact caused the driver to lose control, which led to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak,” the statement read.
Afolabi said LASEMA worked with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings, businesses and other road users.
He added that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and officers from the Ikotun Police Division managed traffic and maintained security around the scene throughout the operation.
“We are grateful to report that there was no loss of life, and no casualties were recorded. The situation has been brought under control, and the fire fully extinguished,” he stated.
Afolabi said efforts were ongoing to evacuate the burnt tanker from the road, with heavy-duty equipment deployed to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, urged motorists to obey speed limits, particularly around speed bumps and residential areas, stressing that caution helps protect lives and property.
“We use this opportunity to remind all motorists of the importance of adhering to speed limits, particularly around designated bumps and in residential corridors. Such caution saves lives and protects property,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to emergency preparedness and rapid response while commending responding agencies and residents for their cooperation.
