The Anambra State Government has banned the construction of speed bumps on public roads without official approval, warning that offenders will face sanctions.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, who said the move was prompted by the growing number of unauthorised speed bumps being erected by residents and communities across the state.

According to the government, all speed bumps and their locations must now receive prior approval from the state, while the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure will provide a standard design for installations.

The government said speed bumps would only be permitted in critical locations such as markets, schools, churches and other areas approved by the authorities.

It warned that constructing speed bumps without authorisation or outside designated locations would constitute an offence.

The statement read, “The government of Anambra State hereby informs the Ndị Anambra and the general public that individuals and communities are no longer permitted to construct speed bumps on public roads without prior approval.

The state explained that the policy was introduced to curb indiscriminate installations, which it said have damaged road infrastructure and created safety concerns for motorists and other road users.

Residents seeking further clarification were advised to contact the Anambra State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
