Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Flamingos after their historic 2-1 victory over Japan secured the country’s first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title on Saturday.

The victory in Rabat, Morocco, also made the Flamingos the first African team to win the competition.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu congratulated the team on Saturday after returning from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. He described the victory as a proud moment for Nigeria and a major achievement for African women’s football.

The President praised the players for their courage, discipline and determination throughout the tournament. He also recalled that the team had promised to bring the trophy home after their semi-final victory.

“I followed your journey throughout this tournament, and after your semi-final victory, you promised to bring the trophy home. Today, you have kept that promise,” he said.

Tinubu added that the players had shown what teamwork, hard work and self-belief could achieve. He said their victory would inspire millions of young Nigerian girls who dream of reaching the highest levels of sports.

“Your victory is an inspiration to millions of young Nigerian girls who dream of achieving greatness. You have shown them that with hard work, opportunity and determination, they too can reach the highest levels of achievement,” he said.

The President specifically praised Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, whose goals secured Nigeria’s victory over Japan. He also commended the entire squad for their teamwork during the competition.

Tinubu extended his congratulations to the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission for their roles in the team’s success.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to grassroots sports development and creating more opportunities for young Nigerians, particularly girls, to develop their talents.

“Today, Nigeria celebrates you. You have written your names in gold, and your country is immensely proud of you,” he said.

“Congratulations once again, Flamingos. Thank you for making Nigeria proud,” he added.
