A shooting near Seattle’s iconic Space Needle claimed the lives of three people and injured at least four others, including a toddler, on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred during the “Bite of Seattle” summer festival, a popular food and cultural event that draws locals and tourists to the city’s northwestern district.
Seattle Police confirmed that one suspect has been arrested while authorities continue to search for another. Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Davis said shots rang out around 6:00 pm (0100 GMT), describing the scene as involving “two people who we believe were shooting at each other.” Two firearms were recovered from the area, he added.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene at Seattle Centre, while a third succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Four others were receiving treatment at Harborview Medical Centre, including a toddler, a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a woman of unspecified age who was undergoing surgery.
Davis confirmed one of these patients later died, while the remaining patients were reported to be in stable condition. Another victim was treated at the University of Washington Medical Centre for gunshot injuries.
Governor Bob Ferguson deployed State Patrol SWAT officers to assist local police, expressing solidarity with those affected.
“My prayers are with the families of the victims, and the responders as they work to keep people safe,” he wrote on X.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson described the shooting as “an act of horrific violence,” emphasising the city’s support for both the victims and first responders.
“Our attention belongs to the people whose lives were taken, those fighting to recover, and the families beside them,” she said, thanking officers who acted quickly to secure a suspect.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before chaos erupted. Others recounted fleeing in panic as the shooting unfolded, underscoring the shock that rippled through the festival.
