United States President Donald Trump has thanked Morocco’s King Mohammed VI after the North African country named a major new highway in his honour.

“Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco — such a great honour,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, alongside a video of the “President Donald J. Trump” highway.

Trump said he looked forward to “travelling the entire length of this great highway someday, hopefully soon.”

The highway stretches 1,055 kilometres from Tiznit to Dakhla, a city in the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

The move underscores close ties between Washington and Rabat. Morocco has the longest unbroken treaty of friendship in United States history, dating to 1786, when the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship was signed.

Morocco launched the project in 2015 as part of a broader development program for the southern provinces.

The road became fully operational in January 2025 following years of construction and upgrades, with a total cost estimated at around 10 billion dirhams.

In light of the U.S. declaration in December 2020 acknowledging Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, the tribute emphasises the close diplomatic relations between Washington and Rabat.
