Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has ordered an investigation into Saudi Arabia’s allegation that drones targeting the kingdom were launched from Iraqi territory by pro-Iran groups.
The directive was issued to the country’s security authorities to examine the claims made by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence, according to a statement released on Monday by the Prime Minister’s spokesman, Sabah al-Numan.
The move follows accusations by Riyadh that drones used in attacks on its territory originated from Iraq.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella coalition of Iran-backed Shiite militias, rejected the allegation, describing it as fabricated.
The group claimed the accusation was an attempt by Saudi Arabia to deflect attention from what it described as its inability to respond to attacks carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
It also warned Riyadh against taking any action inside Iraq, saying any such move would be met with a strong response.
