A senior Nigerian soldier, Abdussalam A. Ude, was killed by gunmen during a suspected abduction attempt at his residence in Badna, New Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, on Monday night.
The attackers reportedly stormed his home during a heavy downpour in an attempt to abduct him. However, he resisted before the assailants shot him multiple times.
A journalist who lives in the community, which borders Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory, confirmed the incident to Punch.
A resident also told Punch that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Kurudu visited the scene on Tuesday and evacuated the victim’s body to a morgue.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command said its investigation confirmed that the attack occurred in Badna, New Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and not within the FCT.
The command said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, ordered an investigation immediately after reports of the incident circulated online.
“Investigations revealed that the incident occurred in Badna, New Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and not within the jurisdiction of the FCT Police Command as falsely portrayed in the circulating publications,” the statement read in part.
The police expressed concern over what they described as misleading reports placing the incident in Abuja, saying the claims had unnecessarily created panic among residents.
“The command is concerned that some blogs and media outlets, in an attempt to gain traction, have deliberately attributed the incident to the FCT, thereby creating unnecessary panic, heightening public anxiety, and misinforming residents of the nation’s capital,” the statement added.
It said the Commissioner of Police had ordered the immediate deployment of operational and intelligence personnel to border communities adjoining Nasarawa State to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the Federal Capital Territory or carrying out attacks within the capital.
When contacted, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said the Army was preparing a statement on the incident.
