The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate suspension of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, over what it described as partisan conduct following his appearance at an event organised by the City Boy Movement.
The demand comes after the City Boy Movement inaugurated its Lagos chapter in Ikeja on Tuesday, pledging to mobilise young people and grassroots supporters for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The event was attended by political figures, traditional rulers, youth leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Videos circulating on social media showed Fatai arriving at the gathering and exchanging greetings with members of the group.
Reacting in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the NDC condemned the police commissioner’s presence at the event, arguing that it raised concerns about the neutrality of the police ahead of the next general election.

The opposition party said Fatai’s attendance at a political gathering promoting a candidate could undermine public confidence in the impartiality of the police, warning that it suggested he could be biased in carrying out his responsibilities during the elections.
The NDC urged the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Wednesday to suspend and sanction the commissioner, while calling on the force to publicly reaffirm its commitment to neutrality throughout the electoral process.

It also asked the police to guarantee the safety of voters and supporters of all political parties, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the opposition party wrote.
“We understand that the rudderless APC-led administrations have no iota of respect for our institutions, but seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: He will be biased in the discharge of his duties during the elections.
“We therefore demand that the police authorities immediately suspend and sanction the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani. We further demand that the Police authorities make a firm commitment to playing a neutral role in the upcoming election.
“That the Police authorities protect voters and supporters of other candidates who are not members of the ruling party. That the Police ensure the safety of the lives and property of all voters, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or party affiliation,” it said.
