At least 25 people have been killed and 44 others injured after a passenger bus crashed into a ravine in Algeria, marking one of the country’s deadliest road accidents in recent years.

The crash happened on Friday near the coastal town of Boumerdes, east of the capital, Algiers.

According to Algeria’s Civil Defence Agency, the bus veered off the road and plunged into a ravine for reasons that are yet to be determined.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 9:40 a.m. local time to rescue victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

The agency said at least 44 people were injured, warning that the death toll could increase as some victims remain in critical condition.

The accident is the deadliest road crash recorded in Algeria in recent years.

In August 2025, another bus plunged into a ravine near Algiers, killing 18 people. In December 2025, 14 people also died after a bus overturned in the southern region of Bechar.

Road safety authorities say human error, especially speeding, remains the leading cause of traffic accidents in the country.

Official figures show that 3,838 people were killed and more than 37,000 injured in road crashes across Algeria in 2025.
