US President Donald Trump urged caution on Friday regarding proposals to grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot air defence missiles, tempering expectations after earlier talks with Kyiv.
Speaking at the Camp David presidential retreat, Trump highlighted the advanced capability of the system and stressed that the United States must exercise extreme care before allowing another country to produce these weapons.
The comments follow a meeting at the White House earlier in the week, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought approval to build the defence systems locally to counter intensifying Russian strikes.
Although Zelenskyy publicly claimed Trump had agreed to the licensing deal, the US president offered a more reserved assessment, stating only that the pair discussed many issues during a successful meeting.
The discussion comes as Russia escalates its use of high-speed ballistic missiles, making last month the deadliest for Ukrainian civilians since early 2022.
While diplomatic ties between the two leaders have warmed during Trump’s second term, Washington continues to weigh the risks of expanding missile production rights even as long-range strikes between Kyiv and Moscow continue to escalate.
