Iran, Oman Near Strait of Hormuz Deal

Tehran and Muscat are nearing an agreement on a new maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei on Sunday.

Speaking on state television, Baqaei stated the proposed corridor respects the sovereign rights and national security of both nations, following separate confirmation from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that negotiations are entering their final stages.

The strategic waterway—a transit point for nearly 20 per cent of global oil—remains under effective Iranian control following the outbreak of war on February 28.

Baqaei clarified that the new route operates independently of whether the Strait fully reopens, placing sole responsibility for the waterway’s closure on U.S. naval blockades and hostile operations that derailed a mid-June diplomatic agreement.
