The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has mourned the death of former Minister of Finance and Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing him as a distinguished public servant whose contributions to Nigeria would be remembered.
In a condolence message shared on Sunday, Obi paid tribute to the late statesman, who also served as a diplomat and held several public offices during his lifetime.
“I am saddened by the passing of Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, the Sardauna of Sokoto, former Minister of Finance, and diplomat who served Nigeria in various capacities,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor said Alhaji’s years of service to the country and the Sokoto Sultanate formed an enduring legacy.
“He will be remembered for his years of public service and his role as the Sardauna of Sokoto. His contributions to the nation and the Sokoto Sultanate will remain part of his legacy,” he said.
Obi extended his condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Sokoto Sultanate, the late statesman’s family and others grieving his death.
“On behalf of my family and myself, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, the Sultanate of Sokoto, the royal family, and all who mourn his passing,” he stated.
He prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and comfort for his family and loved ones.
Abubakar Alhaji was a veteran Nigerian public servant who served as Minister of Finance and held several senior positions in government and the diplomatic service.
He was also the Sardauna of Sokoto, a prestigious traditional title within the Sokoto Sultanate, and was widely regarded as an influential administrator and elder statesman.
His death has drawn tributes from political leaders and prominent Nigerians, who have acknowledged his contributions to public service and national development.
