Washington state voters passed a ballot measure barring transgender girls from “competing with and against female students,” marking a major US midterm loss for LGBTQ advocates in the normally blue state.
Opponents conceded defeat after approximately 57 per cent of voters approved the initiative.
The conservative measure requires student athletes to undergo physical reproductive organ exams or genetic and hormone testing.

Medical experts condemned the law, stating it is “not backed by clinical guidelines and would create unwarranted stress and harm for young girls.”
Proponents celebrated the outcome, with the conservative political action committee Let’s Go Washington declaring the result “a huge win for girls in Washington state” and posting on social media that “Girls will compete without boys in their sports!”

Conversely, advocacy groups strongly criticised the move as a deceptive bid “by MAGA forces to target trans kids for their own political gain.”
Libby Watson, campaign manager for No Hate WA State, called the outcome a “disappointment” but stressed that “the fight is not over,” reassuring trans youth: “We stand with you and will continue to fight for a day when you can play sports without controversy.”
