Fifteen bodies believed to be those of Tigray rebel fighters were recovered from a river in a Sudanese border town on Monday after clashes with Ethiopian forces, a medical source told AFP.
The bodies were retrieved from the Setit River by residents and taken to Wad al-Hulaywah hospital, where six wounded fighters were also treated, according to the source.
Hundreds of Ethiopians have crossed into neighbouring Sudan in recent days, fleeing renewed fighting between Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The TPLF accused the Ethiopian government on Saturday of launching a large-scale ground offensive after fighting broke out in Shererina, northern Ethiopia. The clashes ended on Sunday, according to the rebel group, which did not provide casualty figures.
Ethiopian authorities have not commented on the accusation or confirmed who initiated the fighting.
Residents on the Sudanese side of the border reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions during the clashes.
A witness in the Sudanese border town of Hamdayet said several wounded people had crossed from Ethiopia and were staying at the home of a local community leader.
Some wounded TPLF fighters were among those who fled into Sudan, which is itself battling a devastating civil war between the army and paramilitary forces that began in 2023.
Relations between Ethiopia and Sudan have also deteriorated. Addis Ababa accused the Sudanese army in May of supporting TPLF-linked fighters, while Khartoum has accused Ethiopia of allowing drone attacks to be launched from its territory with support from the United Arab Emirates.
Sudan’s war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
Thousands of Ethiopians displaced by the 2020-2022 Tigray conflict have also remained in Sudan’s border areas. The conflict left at least 600,000 people dead, according to an African Union estimate.
