Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by Nigeria’s anti-graft agency to freeze all state government accounts, his office disclosed on Wednesday.
Adeleke’s allegation comes days before the state governorship election on Saturday, August 15.
The governor, in a statement issued by Information Commissioner Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was also reportedly planning to freeze the accounts of top government officials.
Adeleke said the alleged move, if true, would amount to “the height of lawlessness” and was designed to “paralyse government activities” ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The governor declared that there was “no legal basis or justification” for any attempt to freeze the state’s accounts.
He asserted that the anti-graft agency had no legal powers to take such action against a state government.
The EFCC had not issued a public response to the governor’s allegation at the time of publication.
