The Delta State Police Command has foiled an attempted abduction and arrested two suspects in separate intelligence-led operations, recovering firearms, ammunition and other items linked to suspected criminal activities.

The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, disclosed the developments in a statement on Wednesday, describing the operations as “another breakthrough in its sustained fight against violent crime.”

According to Edafe, operatives of the Ebrumede Division arrested one suspected armed robber while two others escaped during a stop-and-search operation along Garki-Uti Road in Effurun.

“On 4 August 2026, operatives of the Ebrumede Division, while on intensive stop-and-search duty along Garki-Uti Road, Effurun, intercepted three suspected armed robbers. During the operation, Benjamin Haruna (28) was arrested, while two other suspects identified as Omelo and Alabanco escaped on a motorcycle,” the statement said.

Police said a search of the suspects’ bag led to the recovery of “two locally made double-barrel guns, eleven live cartridges, one expended cartridge, one axe, two Android phones, two power banks, two wristwatches, one lighter, and one camouflage military polo.”

Preliminary investigations, according to the police, indicate that the suspects were transporting the exhibits to their hideout along Sapele Road.

The command said the arrested suspect remains in custody while a coordinated manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

In a separate operation, operatives of the Ughelli ‘A’ Division foiled what police described as a planned kidnapping after acting on credible intelligence.

According to Edafe, the operation followed information that 26-year-old Jeremiah Kwane had “allegedly attempted to recruit an individual into a kidnapping syndicate with a view to abducting a pastor and retired school principal in Ughelli.”

“The intelligence was immediately acted upon, leading to the arrest of the suspect at his duty post in Ughelli,” Edafe said.

Edafe added that a search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of one single-barrel gun and two live cartridges.

The suspect is currently undergoing further investigation.

Reacting to the operations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s determination to tackle violent crime across the state.

He reaffirmed the command’s resolve to relentlessly pursue kidnappers, armed robbers and other violent criminals, while urging residents to continue supporting the police with “timely and credible information to enhance the safety and security of all.
