Nigerian human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of sponsoring supporters of President Bola Tinubu to confront participants in Wednesday’s RevolutionNow protest.
In a post on X, Sowore alleged that the security agency mobilised the pro-Tinubu supporters in an attempt to counter the rally but claimed they failed to disrupt the procession.
“The lawless @OfficialDSSNG, led by its cowardly and most insecure DG, Tosin Ajayi, was so frightened by today’s #RevolutionNOW protest that he hired fake pro-Tinubu ‘protesters’ to confront our team,” Sowore wrote.
He further claimed that the Tinubu supporters “were no match for the people’s determination, and some eventually joined our procession.”
Sowore also alleged that they had been instructed to call for his arrest over his criticism of President Bola Tinubu.
“Their scripted assignment was to demand that the same lawless @OfficialDSSNG arrest me for saying, ‘Tinubu Must Go,'” he said.
The activist argued that the alleged mobilisation reflected the government’s response to growing public dissatisfaction.
“When a government resorts to manufacturing counter-protests instead of addressing the people’s grievances, it only exposes its fear of the growing demand for revolutionary change,” he added, using the hashtag #TINUBUMUSTGO.
Crowds gathered on the streets of Lagos and Abuja on Wednesday to express concerns over insecurity, the rising cost of living, alleged repression and what organisers described as a shrinking democratic space under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In Lagos, suspected thugs disrupted the rally and allegedly attacked participants.
The #RevolutionNow movement was launched by Sowore in 2019 as a campaign calling for sweeping political and economic reforms in Nigeria.
Since then, it has organised several nationwide rallies focused on governance, insecurity, corruption and the cost of living.
Previous editions have at times been met with security interventions and arrests, with Sowore himself facing multiple legal proceedings over activities linked to the movement.
