Infantino Faces Backlash Over FIFA Decisions

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has arrived in Colombia to attend the inauguration of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, as he faces growing criticism over recent decisions at world football’s governing body.

Infantino landed in the city of Cali on Friday, accompanied by CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez, according to images released by the Colombian Football Federation.

His visit comes as FIFA continues to face backlash over its now-abandoned proposal to allow private investment in the FIFA World Cup.

The proposal ignited widespread criticism, particularly from UEFA, which on Thursday maintained its threat to boycott future World Cups despite FIFA withdrawing the plan.

Infantino is expected to seek a fourth and final term as FIFA president during the organisation’s presidential election in Rabat in March next year.

The FIFA chief, who is known to have close ties with several conservative political leaders, including US President Donald Trump, is scheduled to attend De la Espriella’s inauguration ceremony later on Friday.

Before the ceremony, Infantino is expected to visit a sports complex where he will take part in a children’s football festival.
