Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris on Friday called on the Nigerian military to eradicate bandits threatening the safety of lives and property in the state, as he commended troops deployed to bolster security in the region.
Idris made the appeal during an unscheduled visit to troops at their camp in Yauri, where he praised soldiers for their gallantry and commitment to duty and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies.
“Bandits are trying to embarrass us. They are coming to attack our people. The security agencies must wipe away these bandits, and the capability of the military should come to bear,” Idris said.
The governor said security was a collective responsibility and called on state governments to remain active stakeholders in supporting the national government to secure vulnerable communities.
“The issue of security is the responsibility of all. State governments must be active stakeholders in support of the Federal Government to secure volatile areas, making them safe to allow farmers to go back and cultivate their farms,” he said.
Idris thanked the chief of army staff for deploying additional military units to the state, saying the move had answered the state government’s call for increased military presence in affected areas.
“I’m happy about your performance. The Chief of Army Staff, supported by the military hierarchy, has answered our prayers by sending you here to Kebbi,” he told the troops.
The governor identified the Yauri, Shanga and Ngaski areas as experiencing incursions by bandits from neighbouring Niger, Zamfara and Kwara states.
“Before your arrival, other security agencies have been alive to their responsibilities. Your coming will boost their morale,” he said.
“I’m impressed by your number. I thank the Chief of Army Staff for finding Kebbi worthy to send additional troops to the state,” he added.
