Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday inspected the vandalised Festac-Alakija Bridge, assuring residents that the structure remained safe.
According to a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu was accompanied by contractors handling the project, members of the State Executive Council, and local government chairmen during the inspection.

The governor, after inspecting the affected sections, said the bridge remained structurally sound and assured Lagos residents of their safety.
He also warned vandals and those who purchase stolen government property that they would face the full weight of the law, while urging residents to reject such activities.
“The Governor has visited the Alakija bridge for an on-the-spot assessment of the damaged portions by some criminal elements. The Governor, along with the contractors, Exco members and Local Government Chairmen, assessed the bridge.
“The Governor assured residents of the sound integrity of the bridge. He, however, warned that the full weight of the law would be brought upon vandals and buyers of vandalised govt property, urging people to desist from unscrupulous practices,” it read.
The inspection followed Sanwo-Olu’s directive to security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the vandalism, which he described as a criminal attack on public infrastructure.
A viral video showed extensive damage to parts of the bridge, including broken sections of concrete pillars and exposed reinforcing steel bars, reportedly removed by suspected scavengers.
No fewer than 27 suspected hoodlums were subsequently arrested in connection with the vandalism of the bridge, which links Festac Town and Alakija.
