The Lagos State Government has arrested 27 suspected hoodlums following the discovery of extensive vandalism beneath the newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Friday, saying the arrests were made during a joint midnight enforcement operation carried out by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force.
According to Wahab, the operation was part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to clear the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of environmental infractions, illegal motor parks, roadside trading, market displays on highway setbacks and pedestrian walkways.
He said the enforcement exercise uncovered what he described as “a disturbing act of vandalism” beneath the newly completed bridge.
“Investigations revealed that suspected hoodlums had deliberately vandalised critical structural components of the bridge by removing iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other supporting materials essential to the integrity of the infrastructure,” Wahab said.
He added that “this criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure.”
Wahab said the joint operation involving the RRS and KAI task force led to the arrest of 27 suspects, who would face prosecution under Lagos State law.
“The operation led to the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums, who will be prosecuted in accordance with the extant laws of Lagos State,” he said.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and maintaining order across the state.
“The Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting public infrastructure and will continue to take decisive action against individuals or groups engaged in acts of vandalism, environmental infractions, and other criminal activities that threaten the safety and wellbeing of residents,” Wahab said.
The latest arrests follow ongoing enforcement efforts by the Lagos State Government to curb vandalism, illegal trading, and environmental violations along major transport corridors, particularly the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway.
