Super Falcons Lose World Cup Spot After 1-0 Cameroon Defeat

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final, leaving their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Nyadjou scored the only goal in the 19th minute, giving Cameroon a lead Nigeria could not overturn.

Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was key to the victory, making eight saves as the Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser.

Nigeria created several chances but struggled to beat Bihina, who remained firm throughout the match.

The defeat means the Super Falcons will not qualify directly for the 2027 Women’s World Cup through the WAFCON route.

Only the four teams that reach the semi-finals of the African championship will secure automatic qualification for the tournament in Brazil.

As one of the four defeated quarter-finalists, Nigeria will now enter the African play-offs alongside the other quarter-final losers.

The winner of that route will have another opportunity to reach the inter-confederation play-offs and fight for a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s World Cup hopes therefore remain alive, but the Super Falcons now face a tougher path to Brazil.
