The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said Tuesday it was working with aviation agencies, airlines and security forces to prevent disruption to airport operations during the ongoing industrial action by aviation unions.

The Tuesday industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Air Transport Employees has disrupted flight operations at Lagos and Abuja airports.

FAAN, in a statement on Tuesday, said it was coordinating with relevant stakeholders to minimise the impact of the protest and ensure that airport operations remained orderly.

The Authority confirmed that earlier operational challenges affecting the movement of some flights had been addressed through inter-agency coordination.

 

The full statement reads: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is closely monitoring developments arising from the ongoing industrial action by aviation unions and wishes to assure the travelling public of its commitment to maintaining safe, secure and orderly airport operations.

“FAAN recognises the legitimate role of organised labour and supports the ongoing efforts of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, and other stakeholders towards an amicable resolution of the issues at hand.

“In the interim, FAAN is working closely with the relevant aviation agencies, airlines, security agencies and other stakeholders to minimise the impact of the industrial action and ensure that airport operations are not disrupted.

“The Authority also confirms that earlier operational challenges affecting the movement of some flights within the airside environment have been addressed through ongoing inter-agency coordination, and measures are being sustained to support the orderly continuation of flight operations.

“FAAN remains committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s airports remain safe, secure, functional and accessible to passengers and other airport users.

“Passengers are advised to remain calm and maintain contact with their respective airlines for real-time information regarding their flights.

“FAAN appreciates the understanding and patience of the travelling public and remains. confident that the ongoing engagements under the leadership of the Honourable Minister will lead to a speedy and mutually acceptable resolution.”
