Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a massive coordinated drone strike on Wednesday, targeting army-controlled cities across the country.

Air defence systems engaged a wave of drones over the capital Khartoum, El-Obeid in Kordofan, and the northern cities of Atbara and El-Damer.

RSF spokesman Al-Fatih Qurashi confirmed the strikes targeted army warehouses, fuel depots, and military airports.

While explosions rattled civilians and damaged local infrastructure, including a mosque and an electricity transformer in Khartoum North, authorities reported no immediate casualties.

The fresh assault follows recent military setbacks for the RSF, which lost control of a critical highway connecting Khartoum to El-Obeid last month.

In response, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo threatened a large-scale offensive against army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s forces.

Amid the escalating retaliatory strikes, rights group Emergency Lawyers reported that army troops killed at least five civilians and injured 10 others near Jabret al-Sheikh, adding to mounting accusations of atrocities committed by both sides.

The renewed violence undermines the military’s efforts to project stability across central, northern, and eastern Sudan, where millions of displaced residents have tried to return to devastated cities.

Since erupting in April 2023, the war between the two former allies has killed an estimated 200,000 people and triggered the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises.
