President Hakainde Hichilema held a strong lead in Zambia’s election count on Sunday with 55 percent of declared votes, placing him on course for a second term without a runoff if the margin holds.

The Electoral Commission’s figures showed Hichilema had secured 1,056,812 votes, or 54.82 percent, with results from 105 of 226 constituencies announced by 1500 GMT.

His main opponent, Brian Mundubile, trailed with 830,841 votes, or 43 percent.

Thursday’s presidential election, which also included parliamentary and local polls, is widely viewed as a referendum on Hichilema’s handling of the economy since the country emerged from a debt crisis.

The electoral commission temporarily suspended vote counting on Friday, citing attacks on officials and the theft of ballot papers.

Police have dismissed reports from Mundubile’s camp that the opposition leader had been arrested.
