The United States urged the UN Security Council on Monday to expand the Darfur arms embargo to cover all of Sudan, warning that the nation’s conflict risks drawing in neighbouring countries.

With the two-decade-old Darfur arms restrictions set to expire on September 12, 2026, US envoy Massad Boulos called for a new resolution to curtail “external support” and restrict weapons shipments, including military drones.

Expanding the embargo requires a Security Council vote, but Russia warned against new measures that would affect the Sudanese army.

Sudan’s UN ambassador Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed advocated for a simple “technical extension” of current Darfur restrictions, arguing that a broader embargo would weaken civilian protection.

Meanwhile, UN officials and peace activists highlighted how foreign military, financial, and logistical assistance to both sides continues to intensify the conflict.
