Guinea Landfill Collapse Death Toll Rises to 34

A massive landfill collapse following heavy rains in Guinea’s capital has killed at least 34 people and injured 33 others, health authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The disaster struck the Dar es Salam neighbourhood of Conakry early Sunday morning, as a wall of garbage caved in and destroyed several nearby homes, wiping out multiple entire families.

Health Minister Khaite Sall announced the updated death toll and revealed that the victims included several Sierra Leonean nationals.

Government officials have contacted the Sierra Leone embassy to assist in identifying and recovering the bodies, while Guinea prepares to organise a mass burial for the deceased.

The collapse occurred just days after the government announced plans to evict residents and secure the high-risk area against seasonal landslides.

Authorities now plan to rehouse approximately 1,500 displaced families as torrential rains continue throughout the region’s intense wet season.
