Thousands of mourners gathered in Conakry on Friday for a mass funeral honouring 36 victims killed when a massive landfill collapsed in a suburban neighbourhood following heavy rainfall.
The disaster occurred overnight between August 22 and 23 in the Dar-es-Salam district, burying many residents as they slept in nearby homes.
During the ceremony, authorities revised the official death toll to 36 and confirmed that 17 of the deceased held Sierra Leonean nationality.
The solemn event began at a mosque in the Bambeto suburb, where thousands—including grieving family members, religious authorities, and government officials—assembled for traditional Muslim funeral prayers.
Conakry Governor General Mahawa Cisse expressed national grief and solidarity with the victims’ families before officials transported the bodies to the Bambeto cemetery for burial.
Emergency officials reported that roughly 20 injured survivors remain hospitalised, while relief services have assisted more than 1,600 affected individuals.
Following the fatal landslide, Guinean authorities initiated demolition efforts targeting homes in high-risk zones near the garbage dump to prevent future tragedies.
However, displaced residents criticised the harsh conditions of the government’s clearance operations and demanded urgent relocation assistance to secure safe housing.
