Spanish police have arrested a fugitive dubbed the “Master of Escapes” after he broke out of prison four times.
Authorities said they arrested the man, wanted by Italy under a European arrest warrant, in Tarragona, northeastern Spain, on Wednesday.
Police said he escaped from a maximum-security prison in Italy in December by sawing through window bars and using knotted bedsheets to lower himself.
He had previously escaped from prisons in Terni and Parma in Italy and from a Belgian prison, where he reportedly used a human pyramid to climb the walls.
“It sounds like something out of a movie, but sometimes reality is stranger than fiction,” Spanish police said.
Authorities described the fugitive as “dangerous” but did not release his name or details of the offences that led to his imprisonment.
Police tracked him to a neighbourhood in Tarragona where he was believed to be living.
He resisted arrest, while several people accompanying him allegedly tried to stop the officers.
One person reportedly injured two police officers.
Police said the fugitive was carrying false identification documents and two €500 notes suspected to be counterfeit.
A judge ordered him to remain in custody without bail while extradition proceedings to Italy continue.
