Norway Sets Funeral Date for King Harald V

Norway’s royal palace announced on Sunday that Oslo Cathedral will host the funeral service for the late King Harald V on Wednesday, September 9, at 1:00 pm.

Presiding Bishop of the Church of Norway Olav Fykse Tveit will lead the ceremony for the 89-year-old monarch, who passed away on Friday morning.

The palace will move the King’s casket from the Red Salon to the palace chapel on Monday afternoon, opening the doors on Tuesday for the public to pay their final respects.

On the same day as the public viewing, Norway’s new monarch, King Haakon VIII, will swear an oath of allegiance before parliament.

King Harald earned high praise throughout his 35-year reign for modernising the constitutional monarchy and embodying an inclusive, tolerant nation, even as health challenges forced him to reduce his public workload in recent years.

The King maintained strong public affection despite recent high-profile scandals surrounding the royal family.

His daughter-in-law, Queen Mette-Marit, faced intense scrutiny over past connections to Jeffrey Epstein, while courts sentenced her son, Marius Borg Hoiby, to four years in prison for rape in June—a decision he is currently appealing.
