The US Treasury issued new $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump’s face on Wednesday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The US Mint made rolls of 25 coins available for $61 and 100-coin bags for $154.50.
While the Treasury initially left the status of the coins unclear, the Mint confirmed on Wednesday that the $1 coins are actively entering general circulation as legal tender.
Placing a sitting president on circulating currency directly challenges federal law, which prohibits living individuals from appearing on US money.
The release marks the latest effort in Trump’s broader campaign to reshape American institutions during his second term.
His administration previously placed his name on the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, demolished the White House East Wing for a new ballroom, and added his signature to US banknotes.

The obverse side of the new coin displays Trump’s portrait alongside the mottos “Liberty” and “In God We Trust,” anchored by the dates 1776–2026.
The reverse side showcases a presidential seal where an eagle holds arrows and an olive branch behind a shield bearing the number 250.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also revealed plans in May to introduce a $250 bill featuring Trump, though that proposal still requires congressional approval to alter currency laws.
