The Government of Cape Verde has declared two days of mourning after 25 people, mostly children and teenagers, were killed in a bus crash on Saturday.
Officials said the bus veered off the road and plunged into a deep ravine after an excursion to a village inside a volcanic crater.
According to AFP, such accidents are rare in the Atlantic archipelago, where roads are generally considered to be in good condition.
Cape Verdean leaders attended Mass on Sunday at a local church on the island of Fogo, where 18 coffins were on display.
The bus driver, who organised the annual excursion as a gift for pupils he drove to school during the school term, was also killed in the crash.
Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho told public broadcaster TCV that he had ordered two days of national mourning and said he would take further measures.
President Jose Neves, meanwhile, said he would order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“Right now the priority is to show solidarity with the families of the victims,” he said.
Emergency workers spent the night rescuing victims trapped in the wreckage in a remote, rocky valley.
Seven victims were buried early Sunday, while the remaining burials were scheduled to take place later, according to public radio network RCV.
Dr Dionisio Semedo of the regional hospital on Fogo said 12 people were still receiving treatment, including two in serious condition.
He said the bodies of those killed and injured survivors began arriving at the hospital between 11 p.m. and midnight on Saturday.
