Nigeria’s Falconets have suffered a 2-0 defeat to former champions Spain in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Spain dominated large portions of Monday’s encounter at the Arena Sosnowiec and took the lead in the 13th minute through Marisa García.
Noemí Bejarano created the opening after advancing down the flank and delivering a low cross into the box, allowing García to finish and give Spain the advantage.
Nigeria struggled to threaten the Spanish defence in the opening half, with their first attempt not coming until the 37th minute when Kafayat Mafisere fired a long-range effort wide.
The Falconets stepped up their attacking efforts after the interval, with Precious Oscar and Victory Lucky brought on as Nigeria searched for an equaliser.
Spain, however, continued to pose a threat, while goalkeeper Laia López dealt with Nigeria’s attempts to preserve her side’s lead.
The European side extended its advantage in the 73rd minute after Alba Cerrato pounced on a poor clearance and beat Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to put Spain two goals ahead.
The result leaves Nigeria without a point after the first round of Group F fixtures. China PR currently lead the group following their 5-0 victory over New Caledonia earlier on Monday.
The Falconets will take on China on Thursday, with Nigeria needing a positive result to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
Despite Monday’s setback, Nigeria can still progress to the round of 16. The top two teams from each of the six groups, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance.
The Falconets entered the tournament with a strong record, having finished runners-up in 2010 and 2014 and reached the knockout stage in eight of their previous nine appearances.
The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is being held in Poland from September 5 to 27, with 24 teams divided into six groups.
