Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has accused former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, of favouring and supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 election.
Obi, who contested in the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform, has consistently maintained that he defeated President Bola Tinubu of the APC and other presidential candidates, despite the electoral umpire declaring Tinubu the winner.
In an interview with Arise News, Obi accused Yakubu of being biased.
“In 2003, we took things for granted. We believed INEC. We believed what they were saying, and we thought they would do it,” Obi said.
“Because the chairman then was busy travelling all over the world, telling the world that he and his team are prepared to do the right thing, when he was actually working for the opposition. This time, we will only trust them by doing the right thing ourselves.”
When asked whether he had proof to support his claims, the NDC presidential candidate said he did.
“Yes. Of course, yes. I’m sure if you meet him, he knows it,” Obi said.
He added that he had not met with Yakubu and did not intend to.
“No, no, no. I don’t want to. That is past. Those who think about yesterday and today will miss tomorrow. For me, it’s gone. It’s finished,” he said.
Obi also maintained that officials who conducted the 2023 election knew the process was flawed.
“Forget about the margins that are there. Those who conducted the election, the officials, know they did the wrong thing,” he said.
Yakubu’s tenure ended in 2025.
Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan was nominated by Tinubu on October 9, 2025 and confirmed by the Senate on October 16, 2025, succeeding Yakubu.
