Morocco, Spain Fight for 2030 World Cup Final

Tensions surrounding the 2030 World Cup host venue escalated Friday after Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch publicly reprimanded his country’s football federation chief for prematurely claiming the final.

Speaking at a political rally, Akhannouch urged Royal Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa to stop making campaign promises regarding Casablanca hosting the match before consulting co-hosts Spain and Portugal.

FIFA has yet to select the host venue among the three co-host nations, stating it will make an official announcement in due course.

Spain’s football federation head, Rafael Louzan, dismissed the Moroccan official’s declaration as election rhetoric while insisting that Spain should host the showpiece match.

Highlighting Spain’s status as defending world champions and its proven record of organising major sporting events, Louzan argued that reality dictates holding the final on Spanish soil.

Meanwhile, construction on Morocco’s proposed 115,000-seat stadium reached roughly 30 per cent completion in May, with project leaders aiming to finish the venue by late 2027.
