International human rights organisation Amnesty International has warned Nigerian politicians and their associates against making reckless, inciting and divisive remarks as campaigns for the 2027 general elections continue.
In a statement, the organisation said it was closely monitoring and documenting comments that could threaten democratic principles and contribute to violence during the election period.
Amnesty International said previous elections in Nigeria had been marred by incitement, ethnic slurs, violence, threats and the alleged use of state institutions for political suppression.
It warned that those who undermine freedom, justice and other democratic principles must be held accountable.
“Amnesty International is closely monitoring and documenting reckless, inciting and divisive remarks by politicians and their associates during ongoing campaigns,” the organisation said.
It added that previous elections had been characterised by “incitement, ethnic slurs, violence, threats and deliberate use of state institutions for political suppression.”
“Those who undermine democratic principles of freedom and justice must be held to account,” Amnesty International said.
The warning comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and their candidates expected to begin wider mobilisation and campaigning across the country.
