Benin has opened the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC), a specialised medical facility designed to expand access to advanced healthcare nationwide.

The hospital, located in Abomey-Calavi, began opening progressively in June 2025 and was established to treat complex medical conditions and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

CHIC has a capacity of 434 beds and spaces across more than 40,000 square metres, bringing together 18 medical and surgical specialties.

CHIC is also designed to serve patients beyond Benin by expanding access to specialised medical care across the West African sub-region.

The facility forms part of the government’s strategy to position Benin as a destination for high-quality healthcare.

Its development also aims to strengthen local and regional healthcare capacity and expertise, particularly for complex treatments that can require patients to travel outside Africa.

The hospital is expected to give patients more opportunities to access advanced medical care closer to home while supporting the development of specialised healthcare systems in the region.
