Leeds Thrash Newcastle, Surge to Third Place

Leeds United routed Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday, surging to third in the Premier League standings and delivering a harsh first defeat to new Magpies manager Matthias Jaissle.

A Lewis Miley own goal opened the scoring before Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor added strikes to seal a dominant home performance at Elland Road.

Bazoumana Toure netted a late stoppage-time consolation goal for the visitors, but the loss dropped Newcastle down to 12th place.

Newcastle started the match with an inexperienced central midfield after losing Nico Gonzalez early to a concussion substitute.

The opening goal arrived when Ao Tanaka’s shot deflected off Miley and looped into the net, followed just two minutes later by Bogle directing Calvert-Lewin’s header into the bottom corner.

Calvert-Lewin then muscled past defender Sven Botman to score for his fifth consecutive home match, before Okafor completed the four-goal blitz with a second-half volley.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s energy and structure as they moved right behind league leaders Arsenal and Manchester City.

In contrast, Jaissle acknowledged the tough learning curve facing his rebuilt squad, which lost key figures over the summer and struggled to match the physical dominance of the hosts.
