The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned President Bola Tinubu not to push Nigerians beyond their limits, saying the people are nearing a breaking point.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the rising cost of petrol was driving up the prices of food, transportation, electricity, education and other basic necessities, accusing his administration of worsening economic hardship as petrol prices rise to as much as N1,470 per litre.
“President Tinubu has turned the petrol pump into an instrument of punishment for everyday Nigerians,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC said reports of private schools increasing fees by between 30 and 40 per cent are another sign of the pressure households face, noting that incomes have not risen at the same rate.
“Parents are not earning 40 percent more. Their salaries have not risen with the prices of fuel, food, rent, transportation, and school fees,” it said.
The party said it did not blame school proprietors for the increases, arguing that they were also struggling with higher taxes, electricity bills, fuel costs, rent and salaries. It also described petrol at N1,470 per litre as a “Tinubu Tax”, claiming that the rising cost of living has forced some families to skip meals, withdraw their children from school, abandon medical treatment and shut down businesses.
The opposition party also criticised the government for demanding sacrifices from citizens while public officials continued to fund what it described as extravagant lifestyles with public resources.
“An economic policy that produces impressive figures at government briefings but hunger in Nigerian homes is a failure.”
The party said the 2027 election would give Nigerians a chance to choose between continuing Tinubu’s economic policies and the relief programme proposed by its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The ADC said Atiku remains committed to reducing petrol prices by restoring the subsidy to support domestic fuel production, arguing that lower fuel costs would ease pressure on food, transportation and production.
“Unlike Tinubu and APC, we recognise that economic reform must serve the people, not sacrifice them,” the party said.
The ADC urged the President to take urgent steps to address the economic hardship, warning that Nigerians’ patience should not be mistaken for approval.
“Our resilience must not become an excuse for continued cruelty,” the party said.
“Tinubu has had enough time and inflicted enough pain. The people are suffering, businesses are dying, and hope is becoming increasingly expensive. President Tinubu must act now. Don’t push Nigerians to their limits.”
The ADC’s warning comes less than a week after the pump price rose to N1,470 per litre, leaving Nigerians groaning.
