Nigerian Embassy Cuts Qatar Passport Wait

The Nigerian Embassy in Qatar has cut passport processing time to about two weeks after a 10-day intervention in Doha.

The embassy disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

The exercise ran from August 11 to 21, 2026. It enabled the embassy to process passport applications for 751 Nigerian nationals. The applications included 441 requests for five-year passports and 310 for 10-year passports. It said it began distributing completed passports on September 18.

That was less than a month after applicants completed biometric capture.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, described the development as a major milestone.

“The fact that passports are now being completed and returned within about two weeks of capture demonstrates our commitment to improving service delivery and responding to the needs of our community,” Yakubu said.

He said valid passports were important for Nigerians living in Qatar. They are needed for international travel, employment and residency matters.

The embassy said the faster processing system followed rising demand for consular services. It also aims to reduce waiting times for Nigerians seeking new passports or renewals.

The 10-day intervention provided a dedicated period for passport applications. In total, the embassy processed 751 applications during the exercise. Of these, 441 applicants requested five-year passports. Another 310 applied for 10-year passports.

The mission said the accelerated process allowed applicants to receive their documents earlier than under normal diplomatic processing timelines. For those who took part in the Doha exercise, passport distribution began on September 18.

This marked the final stage after biometric capture and passport production.

The embassy said the development reflects its focus on improving services for Nigerians living in Qatar.

Passport issuance and renewal remain among the main services Nigerian diplomatic missions provide abroad. The mission said faster processing would particularly help Nigerians whose travel, employment or residency arrangements depend on valid passports.

It added that the intervention demonstrates the role of diplomatic missions in meeting the consular needs of Nigerians abroad.
