Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described the United States on Tuesday as “the world’s greatest military power” during his address to the UN General Assembly, saying its geographical proximity to Brazil means the reality cannot be ignored.
However, Lula said that even in a “context of renewed hegemonic temptations, Brazil does not fit in anyone’s backyard.”
He also said the people of Venezuela, whose deposed President Nicolás Maduro the US captured earlier this year, “deserve to define their own destiny.”

Lula opened his speech by criticising the UN, saying the organisation “is failing” in its mission to “free” the world from war.
“The UN is failing in one of its most important missions, which is to free humanity from the scourge of war,” he told the audience.
