US Releases $267 Million to Combat Ebola Outbreak

The United States has announced an additional $267 million in funding to support efforts to contain an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The US State Department announced the funding on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, saying Washington remained the largest provider of assistance for the latest outbreak.

With the new funding, total US health and humanitarian assistance for the Ebola response has reached $887 million, according to the State Department.

“To date, the United States government has provided $887 million in direct health and humanitarian assistance to combat the Ebola outbreak,” the US State Department said.

The department said the latest contribution was also intended to encourage other capable countries to increase their support for the response as the outbreak continues to spread.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last month appealed for an additional $1.1 billion to help tackle the epidemic.

According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the outbreak has continued to spread to new parts of the DRC.

Congolese public health officials said more than 3,600 people have died and about 7,500 have been infected since mid-May, making it the country’s deadliest recorded Ebola outbreak.
