Guinea Opposition Leader Toure Dies In Paris

Guinea’s former Prime Minister and opposition leader Sidya Toure has died in Paris at 81, family sources told AFP.

Toure died on Friday after spending about two weeks receiving treatment at the American Hospital of Paris following an illness that began in Abidjan.

He had lived in Abidjan since leaving Guinea after the September 2021 military coup that brought Mamady Doumbouya to power.

Toure had led the Union of Republican Forces (UFR), one of Guinea’s major opposition parties, and continued to direct its activities while living in exile in Ivory Coast.

The UFR was among 40 political parties that Guinean authorities dissolved in March as part of a wider crackdown on political opposition and civil liberties.

Doumbouya seized power in the September 2021 coup and was later elected president in December 2025 in an election that excluded the UFR and two other major opposition parties, the UFDG and RPG.

Toure spent decades at the centre of Guinea’s political life, serving as prime minister, leading the opposition UFR and remaining a prominent voice in the country’s politics until his death.

Then-President Lansana Conté appointed him prime minister in July 1996, and he remained in the position until March 1999, during which his government pursued economic reforms and strengthened Guinea’s financial ties with international institutions.

Toure later became leader of the UFR in 2000 and emerged as a leading opposition figure who challenged successive governments while advocating political and economic reforms.

He contested Guinea’s presidential elections in 2010 and 2015 but lost both times, remaining active in opposition politics despite the political challenges facing his party.

Toure was born in 1945 in Ivory Coast, began his career in Guinea’s economic and financial administration before rising through government and eventually becoming one of the country’s best-known political figures.

His death comes at a time of continued political restrictions in Guinea, where authorities have faced criticism over measures affecting opposition parties and civil liberties.

Current Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah described Toure via his X post as “a prominent figure in Guinea’s political life for three decades” and “a pragmatic reformer”.
