A Nigerian man alongside two others has appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court in South Africa over the alleged theft and resale of Elizabeth “Tsontsho” Moselakgomo’s smartwatch, which the state says was bought for R900 and later sold for R4,000.

Kenneth Chibuzor, Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat face charges linked to the alleged handling and resale of the device. The charges include theft and money laundering, as well as the alleged possession or receipt of stolen property.

Moselakgomo was identified as the sixth victim among women murdered in Ekurhuleni. However, the charges against the three men concern her belongings and do not establish their involvement in her murder.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Chibuzor operated a second-hand goods shop in Kempton Park. He allegedly bought the smartwatch from an unidentified person for R900 without recording the seller’s identification details and other transaction information required by law.

The state alleges that Chibuzor sold the watch to Sekhukhune on September 10, 2026. On the same day, Sekhukhune allegedly registered it to his Gmail account after Moselakgomo’s profile information and settings had been erased.

Sekhukhune is accused of later selling the smartwatch to Moat for R4,000. Moat allegedly advertised the device on social media before selling it to a fourth person for the same amount. The fourth person has not been charged. The NPA said there was insufficient evidence linking the individual to the alleged offences.

Chibuzor faces charges relating to alleged theft, money laundering and contraventions of the Second-Hand Goods Act 6 of 2009. He is also accused of failing to keep the records required for second-hand goods transactions. Alternatively, he faces charges of possessing goods reasonably suspected to have been stolen or receiving stolen property without reasonable cause to believe the seller was entitled to dispose of it.

Sekhukhune and Moat face charges of money laundering and theft. Alternatively, they are accused of possessing or receiving stolen property. The matter was postponed to October 19, 2026, for Chibuzor’s bail application. The court also ordered that his immigration status be verified, while the NPA identified him as a Nigerian citizen.

The account did not name the accused, saying investigations remain at a sensitive stage. The NPA said it remained committed to holding accountable those who allegedly benefit from criminal activities and ensuring justice for victims and their families.

The allegations relate to the acquisition, possession and resale of Moselakgomo’s smartwatch. The NPA’s statement does not identify the three men as suspects in her murder case, and the charges should not be taken as proof of responsibility for her death.
