The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Taraba State University (TSU) has commenced an indefinite strike over the delayed implementation of a 2025 remuneration agreement and outstanding salary arrears.

The union announced the industrial action with immediate effect from October 12, 2026, following what it described as prolonged delays by the Taraba State Government.

ASUU-TSU said its action was driven by two major demands: the immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement at the university and the payment of all salary arrears accrued from January 2026 until the agreed remuneration structure is fully implemented.

The union said it had demonstrated patience and commitment to dialogue throughout its engagement with the state government.

According to the union, discussions began in February 2026 and led to the establishment of a verification committee to assess the existing salary structure and its implementation across the North-East.

The committee concluded its exercise and presented its report on September 24, 2026.

ASUU-TSU said it had suspended its planned industrial action after the government appealed for more time through the Office of the Head of Civil Service, in the interest of industrial harmony.

However, the union said the continued delay in implementing the agreement, despite completing the verification process, left it with no option but to begin the strike.

“ASUU-TSU wishes to emphasise that this action is not a rejection of dialogue. The Union remains open to meaningful and constructive engagement with government and relevant stakeholders,” the union said.

“Such engagement, however, must be sincere, timely and directed towards achieving a definite resolution.”

The union called on the Taraba State Government to honour the processes already concluded and take immediate steps to implement the agreed remuneration framework and settle all outstanding arrears.

It also urged the public to understand that the industrial action aimed to secure fair treatment for university workers, protect their dignity, and ensure that agreements reached in good faith were honoured.
