The trial over Diego Maradona's death enters its final stage in early October 2026 after almost six months of hearings, with the question still unresolved as to whether the football icon's death in late 2020 was unforeseeable or the result of medical negligence during his home care. Argentine football icon Diego Maradona’s family has called for lengthy prison sentences for members of the medical team accused of providing inadequate care before the Argentine football legend’s death in 2020.

Seven medical professionals have been on trial since April over Maradona’s death on November 25, 2020, while he was recovering at a private residence following surgery to remove a brain clot. The 1986 World Cup winner died aged 60 from heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema, about two weeks after the operation.

Prosecutors allege that Maradona’s medical team failed to provide adequate treatment during his recovery. The defendants have denied the charges.

On Wednesday, a lawyer representing Maradona’s daughters, Dalma and Gianinna, described their father’s death as “murder” and asked the court to sentence six of the seven defendants to prison terms of up to 15 years.

Fernando Burlando accused those responsible for Maradona’s care of showing “brutal indifference” towards his condition.

Lawyers representing Maradona’s sisters, Rita, Claudia and Ana, called for sentences of up to 10 years for five defendants, with medical coordinator Nancy Forlini facing the harshest proposed punishment.

A day earlier, the lawyer representing Maradona’s youngest son, Diego Fernando Maradona, sought 16-year prison sentences for Forlini and Maradona’s personal physician, Leopoldo Luque.

State prosecutors have also requested guilty verdicts against six defendants, recommending sentences ranging from four to 12 years and proposing the toughest punishment for Luque.

Closing arguments in the Diego Maradona medical negligence trial are expected to continue until the end of October. The court in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, is then expected to reserve its judgment for a later date.
