Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful knee surgery after suffering an injury in training, the Premier League club confirmed on Friday.
The 26-year-old England international has missed Chelsea’s last two Premier League matches as the club’s medical team assessed the extent of the problem. James was unavailable for the Blues’ 3-0 defeat to Brentford and also sat out their emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea confirmed that medical assessments after the training injury showed surgery was necessary.

“The 26-year-old was absent from Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge while medical assessments took place following the injury suffered in training,” the club said in a statement.
“Those assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action.”

The club added that James has already started his rehabilitation programme and will work closely with Chelsea’s medical staff at the club’s Cobham training base as he begins his recovery.
No specific timeframe has been announced for the Chelsea captain’s return to competitive action.

James’ latest injury represents another setback for the defender, whose availability remains important to Chelsea as they compete for a strong finish in the Premier League.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League table and will continue their campaign with a trip to Everton on Saturday.
James’ absence means Chelsea will have to adjust their defensive options while the England defender completes his rehabilitation and works towards a return to first-team football.
