One worker has sustained minor injuries after a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.

The incident happened at about 6:30 pm on Saturday. No deaths were reported. NEMA said its Abuja Operations Office received an alert about the collapse and activated emergency response agencies.

In a statement issued by its Press Unit, the agency said the FCT Fire Service and other emergency teams were mobilised. NEMA also deployed its AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team to support search-and-rescue operations.

In September, a three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4 hours after officials of the FCT Administration’s Department of Development Control sealed the property and directed occupants to leave. The police said preliminary investigations showed that officials had earlier marked and sealed the building. Rescue operations were later launched at the scene.

In August, two residents were rescued after part of a one-storey residential building containing six blocks of flats collapsed in Kubwa 2/2. They were taken to Kubwa General Hospital in stable condition.

Earlier in May, a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Durumi 3, near Gudu Market, killing five people. Fifteen people were pulled from the rubble. Nine were rescued alive, while one person was reported to be in critical condition.

Following the May collapse, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered a full investigation. He also warned developers to comply with building standards and allow government officials to inspect construction sites.
