NAFDAC said the corps member first visited the camp clinic on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with symptoms suggestive of severe malaria and a history of peptic ulcer disease. He was treated, stabilised and discharged the following morning with oral medication.
He returned to the clinic on Saturday, October 10, with pain in his right thigh, excessive sweating and repeated episodes of low blood pressure.

His condition worsened, and he produced little urine despite receiving fluids. He was subsequently referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, where he fell into a coma. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
NAFDAC said the preliminary clinical assessment identified acute kidney injury resulting from severe dehydration and shock as the suspected cause of death. However, the agency noted that the assessment did not establish whether the medicines given to the corps member played any role in his death.
As part of its investigation, NAFDAC officials have visited the camp clinic, interviewed the medical personnel involved in his treatment and other staff, and collected medicine samples for laboratory testing.
The agency said it would take appropriate regulatory action based on the outcome of the analysis and its wider investigation.
NAFDAC also expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and urged the public to remain calm while the investigation continues, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that medicines sold in Nigeria meet safety, quality and efficacy standards.
